Working for the Man
Bud finally lands a job! Thanks to Old Man Jenkins, Bud has found a job that suits his quirky knowledge of albums and songs perfectly. (More from me as I get this comic completed in the next day or so.)
Sorry for the radio silence, but I’ve had a relapse of my depression; making it hard to even get out of bed most days. On top of that, I have had several weeks of non-stop stress and it finally snapped in my head. I have dealt with mental health issues for a long time now, and I am taking steps to relieve the stress and deal with the depression (I do consult professionals in these matters as well). I’m not here to preach about mental health, and anything I say applies to me solely. I would not take it as any type of advice as I’m no doctor. I simply like to share that I have depression on top of ADHD and I hope by relating my stories that I can help make the subject of depression less of a stigma in our weird society. Soap box put away.
Picking out today’s song was a no-brainer as Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Workin’ For MCA” is a perfect track for today’s comic as Bud wants to work in the music industry and ironically ends up with a job at a record store.
Great to see you’re getting back into the swing of things, at your own pace. You’re not the only one struggling in these strange times, and my anxiety gets triggered with everything that ‘Agent Orange’ does these days. Keep on keeping on man, we’ll all get through this one day at a time, and thanks for all you’re doing with the webcomic, it is always a treat to see an update!
Well, it took a month, but I’m able to reply to your comment finally. It does give me some solace that others are dealing with the same struggles as well. I’m sorry that any of us have to put up with what’s going on, but we’ll get through this. I shall keep on keepin’ on.
Hopefully the stock extends past just ‘rock and roll songs’…boy, these stretches to tie in a CanCon Classic are getting a little convoluted, almost as bad as the reasoning behind some of the lawfare decisions going on down south..but that’s what the ‘judges’ were appointed to do based on willingnioess to follow orders instead of comopetence in jurisprudence.

Good song! I appreciate the exposure to Canadian music as much of it did/does not make down this far. As far as the political stuff, I keep my mouth shut as a cartoonist as I’m not that clever of writer.
A lot of people, even up here, might not recognize the name Valdy, but you’ve probably heard his songs.
Give a listen to Simple Life, A Good Song, Yes I Can, and one of my favourites ‘Dirty Old Man’ another one where the title belies the meaning.
Links to those should be in the sidebar to the first one, I won’t add them here so it doesn’t trigger the autoapproval algorithm.
I have done some searching on YouTube and it’s good stuff for sure!
I remember some Aerosmith songs elevator, dude looks like a lady, eat the rich, angel, rag doll and living on the edge but nothing like Bud. Which means he won’t have to go the YMCA with Bruce Jenner before he changed his sex in Can’t Stop the Music a real bomb of a movie. Nor join the navy nor dance with Bob Hope and the village people aboard the USS Guam and helicopter carrying amphibous warfare ship. Canada fact the tiltwing Canadair CL 84 was tested aboard the USS Guam in 1972 two years before the CL 84 was cancelled. Bud could apply to be a drag with the help of the mystic frog. As for ADHD I have autism and people can be cruel just remember I care about you and I’ll be there for you though not actually in North Carolina in a sexy nurse outfit. It’ll would cool if I could mister Tacky Tan or no mister Tacky Tan looking up my dress snidely saying “I can see your underware”.
I’m autistic and 25 years post op and I have ZERO idea what your deal is personally or sexually. You make us look like kooks and also make me deeply wish this forum had a block function.
I loved Toys in the Attic, but I’d sooner stick my head in a wine press than EVER hear Dude Looks like a Lady again.
As the admin to this website, I am troubled when readers collide in the comment section. My suggestion is to just gloss over comments that are troublesome for you. From where I sit, I see both points of views, but I also enjoy every reader’s comments equally. You have the right to speak your mind, and as long as folks are essentially civil, I tend not to get involved. And yes, the code running the comment section of webcomic websites like mine is weak at best.
Thank you for the kind words and, as always, the creative stories in your comments.
Depression on top of ADHD – yeah, that’s a problem. My nephew has the same combination and has been struggling for 4 years now to get free of the depression that struck him during the Covid period (also, I suspect the ADHD may have played a role in it striking him at all – he had been leading a very active life and being forced into inactivity probably sit well with his ADHD-side)
The past decade (and more) has been extraordinary hard on folks with ADHD. I hope the best for your nephew.
Correction, DIDN’T sit well
Oddly enough, I read your original comment correctly even though “didn’t” wasn’t there. Our brains are amazing things when they work correctly.
Little knowledge can go a long way, especially at the right moment, Bud just showed that.
glad you could get this one out, always look forward to your work.
As Bud is my comic doppelganger, he too has the somewhat useless ability to retain the order of songs on vinyl from back in the day. 🙂
Another song from a pseudo-Canadian band that legally counts as CanCon was allegedly written to get back at the music industry.

Ann Wilson revealed in interviews that the song was about Heart’s anger towards Mushroom Records, who as a publicity stunt released a made-up story of an incestuous affair involving Ann and her sister Nancy Wilson.
I absolutely love “Barracuda” by Heart. I was briefly in a band called Flowstone and the female lead singer we had could belt this song out like Ann herself. “Barracuda” is song I will stay in the car until it ends even if I arrive at my destination. How it goes from 4/4 into two measures of 6/4 and back to 4/4 is freaking amazing!
Another one, American this time, is stated to have been written as a result of record company mistreatment.
It’s hard to distingush from the lyrics but he says it is so it must be 🙂

Nugent could rock as hard as anyone back in the ’70s. The riff from “Great White Buffalo” is mind blowing and the fact he pulled it off on a live album makes it even more unbelievable.
The part where he only gets one take on a live cut is kind of amazing when you think about it.
A comic artist with ADHD and depression – again, it sounds like we are the same person just a few decades apart. 🙃
Here’s to getting out of it soon. And let me know if I should bother you more directly – sometimes that works for me.
Thanks, Nick! Just getting to these comments and I appreciate the offer. When the darkness of depression hovers over us, we forget there are others around us who can lend a helping hand. I’ll try to keep that in mind if and when the darkness comes back around.
Darn the last update was April 15th, I hope that the IRS didn’t nab Byron! 😉
Nope, not the IRS, those days are long gone. I’m retired now and they pretty much leave you alone. 😉
No, no they don’t…they know exactly how much they gave you in pensions and want it back, even if you paid in far more than what you’re going to get out.
